The Eighteenth century, the century of revolutions, changing forever the face of the world as we know it. The United States emerges as a new force in the West, and the French Revolution forever changes the way the people are ruled and the authority of kings. There is much to be found here, great thinkers like Rousseau, Voltaire and Mary WollStoneCraft, historians like Carlyle and Taine and novels and poetry that many still consider the best that was ever written. To steal a phrase from Dickens "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times."
Briefly, on the works that I have selected: I have not selected the works of Voltaire that I want to include yet. Thank you for your patience waiting for them. I was again unable to find the Everyman Library editions that Mr. Durant recommends. If you must blame someone for this, blame the collectors! I am not happy with the quality of the copy of "Gulliver's Travels" that I have found and I am looking for another, but will leave this one posted until then so that a version is available to download. Concerning "The Wealth of Nations," Mr Durant again writes "Selections" for what he recommends reading, I will try to read the whole selection, you can use your own disgression in selectiing which part of the work to read. Concerning the recommended section of Hoffding's "History of Modern Philosophy," Mr. Durant's statement "sections on the 18th century" seems rather vague, as there is not chapter or section called "The 18th Century" in the book, I will look at this later and determine which section(s) are best for this group.
