GROUP 10: EUROPE IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY

The century begins with Napoloeon and his struggles with Europe and Russia. The horrors of war keep getting more devastating with the War of 1812 and the American Civil War. Literature continues to improve and enlighten with the works of Dickens, Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky and Flaubert, to name just a few. Darwin and all the changes and conterversy that his works brought about, (which still seems to be unsettled in some parts of America at the present time!) An incredible century of incredible changes. By the end of it, telephones and telegraphs were making communication possible that had never been dreamed of before, and the world was becoming a much smaller place for those who had access to these new technologies. And it just kept getting smaller and smaller with each decade that passed! This is the century that people most fondly look back on as the "good old days," the simpler times, or used to anyway, even that is a thing of the past now!

Briefly, on the works that I have selected: I've found Everyman Library editions when they were available. #67 Emil Ludwig's biography of "Napoleon" is unavailable as an eBook at this time, I will add it as soon as it does become available.
