For centuries considered the pinnacle of Western civilization, Greek culture and history share an equal position in Mr. Durant's analysis. This group has by far the most selections to read in it. And much of this will be something that has been read before at some point. But try to see it from a fresh perspective and look for things that you may have missed in previous readings.
I also wondered if Mr. Durant has considered a list of additional reading, or supplementary selections. Since the list was first compiled almost 80 years, there are a lot of things that are not covered by the list today. Additions to the list will certainly be something to think about and consider as this website progresses.
Remember that much of what we know of as culture and civilization is based on what you will be reading in this section. As it was the foundation for Western civilization, let it build on your own personal knowledge and education. And enjoy this profound literature and history!
Briefly, on the works that I have selected: Mr. Durant mentions a 2 volume edition of Bury's "History of Greece", I was only able to find 2 editions, both of one volume and chose the one that was published latest. Durant states a preference for the Everyman Library editions of Herodotus, which I also could not find. The Everyman or Everyman's Library books seem to be very popuar as collectibles and I think that is the reason that they are so hard to find as free eBooks online. Mr Dyrant recommends translations by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Sir George Young and Gilbert Murray, and I have noted this in the editions listed. These are all I could find of Euripides works translated at this time, but more can be added as they become available. The Volumes of Plato as translated by Benjamim Jowett are a five volume set that includes everything Mr. Durant suggests and much more that Durant doesn't mention. Concerning the selections of "The Republic" he recommends reading, the texts I have found are numbered, but, I cannot find a copy of the edition he recmmends to compare it with, I am going to read the whole selection.
