For centuries after the fall of Rome, the Church held enormous influence and power in the world. The power to consecrate kings, to collect and distribute money, to heal and excommunicate sinners. It is hard for us in the world today to even comprehend how much power the pope and the church really had. It was the force that held most of Western Europe together and allowed it to grow into the countries that we are familiar with today. The influence that nurtured the people until they became strong enough to live without its influence and throw off its stultifying habits and allow science and reason to take its place.
Briefly, on the works that I have selected: In regard to the "Canterbury Tales"; when stating preferred sections of the book Mr. Durant just writes "Selections", I am not quite sure how to interpret that, so I will read the whole book, you may use your own disgression! (I have waited all my life to find a good circumstance to use that phrase!!) Mr. Durant recommends a five volume edition of Hippolyte Taine's "History of English Literature"; I can find a four volume editon and a one volume (Complete, NOT Abridged) edition and have chosen the one volume edition to minimize the number of volumes that have to be downloaded, I have the links, if someone prefers the four volume edition.
