WHAT I AM CURRENTLY READING.
I am reading the Bible a chapter or two at a time, I think it will hold my interest longer if I read it like this, instead of trying to read it all the way through until I finish it. I am hoping that I can start working on Group 3 later this week!
I just have one chapter left of the Group 2 assignment from Selection #12 Williams "A History of Sceince" and have found that very interesting and entertaining. I can understand why Mr. Durant prefered this history of science, Dr. Williams explains things in a concise but insightful way that encourages the reader to want to learn from him. I wish I had had a science teacher like this when I was in school!
Breasted and Robinson's "Outlines of European History" is a very good book and I am glad that I found it. I am not sure how close it is to Selection #8 "The Human Adventure" that Mr. Durant recommends. I still have not found a copy of "The Human Adventure" that I can use to compare this with, but I am using it as a substitute for that selection. Dr. Breasted is also a teacher that is easy to learn from and encourages further exploring and studying.
THE BOOKS I HAVE FOUND SO FAR.
THERE ARE CURRENTLY 195 VOLUMES FROM 93 SELECTIONS AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD.
June 3, 2009 - I have found Volume 2 of Faure's "History of Art" and have added it to the proper pages! I have also found a three volume set of Shakespeare's Plays and have included it in the appropriate sections. I am still working on the works of Voltaire, I selected what I thought were the best for the list and picked out 20 volumes, I want to go thorugh them all and make sure that they need to be included in the list. I have also re-worked the site to make it more user-friendly, I felt that it could be easier to understand and negotiate the Navigation bar and hope that my changes have done that.
May 16, 2009 - I have completed adding the Reference links to the fourth "More Books" page and now have them all available for viewing, I will continue to add additional works to these pages as time permits. I have also found the works of Voltaire that I want to include and am adding them to the list and books pages now and hope they can be uploaded soon.
May 6, 2009 - I have finished the third "More Books" page and am working on the last. When I have finished these I want to find the works from the authors I have not included yet and then continue finding additional works from the "Best" authors.
April 29, 2009 - The new pages are up and running. I am working on the "More Books" pages and have two of those up now. I have got the Search Bar working better now too. It was rather hard to see before (its right under the guest book!)
April 22, 2009 - I have been working on a new look for the site, making it much easier to navigate, I am hoping I will have it finished tomorrow. Tell me what you think!
April 22, 2009 - I have found the selections I want to include for #91 Edgar Allan Poe and it will be added with the new upgraded pages.
I have added some things to the pages that I feel would be helpful. I've included buttons to download several different PDF Readers for those people that may not have one yet, or that want to try a different one. I've also added Searchboxes to reference materials including an encyclopedia and Wikipedia, from thefreedictionary.com, Meriam-Webster Dictionary, the Oxford English Dictionary at Oxford.com and a searchbox from a site that translates words into different languages from LingvoSoftOnline. The translator looks really good but I haven't tried it out much yet. I wanted something to translate the passages in Latin that are found in a lot of the books that I read. Let me know what you think of them.
I have researched all the selections on the "List" and have found eBook copies of them, except the 8 noted below. I have uploaded them all to my storage site, and currently have 92 of the 100 selections available for download.
These are the books that I DON'T have yet:
I have not selected any of #52 Milton's, or #56 Voltaire's books YET, there are so many out there. I want to select the best I can find.
I am working on the two authors that do not yet have works on the list. I have decided that quality is the most important thing and that if the best quality edition of Shakespeare is a collection of 10 volumes, I will put that on the site and let you decide which parts you want to read. I think it is more important to have the most of the works of these four writers avaialable as possible. I hope that this site is a place that people come back to again and again, to find more books that they want to read. And if reading one or two of Shakespeare's plays inspires one to read more of his plays, I want them all, or as many of them, here as possible.
I am also working on pages that have additional works by the authors on the "List". The "List" already contains the complete works of some of the authors, the Greek writers come to mind, and maybe it would be more correct to say that the extant works are included because many have been lost over the centuries. But some of the authors dont have additional books, Homer for example. But some of the others, have many, many other good books, H. G. Wells, Charles Dickens and Anatole France come to mind first. I want to make as many works by these fine authors available, so that they can be read again and enjoyed.
I will continue to check for copies of the books listed below that may become available. I have found copies of the Beard's "The Agricultural Age" but not the "Industrial Age," they both should be no longer copyrighted, but I just can't find the second volume. The rest may never become available but I will continue to check every so often. I really would like to have eveybook onthe list available here, if possible.
These are the selections that are NOT available as eBooks online at this time.
Four of the selections are completely unavailable, and there are two that I have parts of, but not the whole selections.
Selection#2 Logan Clendenning's "The Human Body"
Selction#8 Breasted and Robinson's "The Human Adventure" (Both volumes are unavailable.)
Selection#11 Elie Faure's History of Art Volume 3.
Selection#37 Cecil Gray's "History of Music"
Selection #67 Emil Ludwigs's "Napoleon"
Selection #90 Charles and Mary Beard's "The Rise of American Civilization" Volume 2 "The Industrial Age"
I am unhappy with the quality of the edition of "Gullivers Travels" that I have found and am looking for a better one.
If you are having problems finding or downloading one of the books that I have found, leave a message (that includes a valid e-mail address) on my guest book (It's in the list on the left of each page) and I will get back to you as soon as possible. It will be my pleasure to e-mail a link to my storage site, so that you can download books that you can't find.
HAPPY READING!!!
